"Serious blog" alert!

I've posted an article on my serious blog. I'd almost given up on that blog, but came across an article that had me INCENSED and had to comment. Please read and let me know what you think (even if you disagree with me. . . I'm far from impartial!!)

I'll admit to a reasonable degree of ignorance about the news in this part of the world. However, it seems pretty clear from this article that the government is using the "war on terror" as a justification for doing something that they've probably wanted to do all along.

Even though you may be "impartial," I wouldn't dare disagree with you :) The only thing I know about Sri Lanka is that Michael Ondaatjee was born there, and I believe he moved to Canada many, many years ago.

I read that article a few days back and was wondering whether you were going to mention it. Ah, the circle of mutual distrust and grievance just gets deeper and deeper and bigger and bigger. The thing that I thought most barbaric, was the fact that there was no warning and that the people were just put on buses and not told where they were being sent. The insecurity and lack of knowledge would have been the worst for me. A government respectful of human rights might still have done such a thing, but would have at least given more clarity to the people that they were deporting. Though, it has to be said, they're not the only ones to have done such a thing. A little spoken-about episode of WW2 involved the sequestration of the entire Japanese-American population in special camps from which they were not allowed any communication with the outside world i.e. concentration camps.

From what I gathered from talking to both Sinhalese and Tamils whilst in Sri Lanka was that the leaders of both sides have little will to talk peace as they now have a lot of power and don't want to lose their hold on it, and of course it's always the poor, ordinary people who suffer in the end.
